Our drive to Rome from Frejus was one of our longest planned on this trip. It was also one of the most interesting to date. We didn't realize how mountainous and curvy the road would be. Tim had to constantly be on the lookout for motorbikes because they were snaking through traffic with just inches to spare. Cars were not much better, moving lanes aggressively. After a while we started passing through mountain tunnels popping out on high bridges with views of the sea. Mountain to bridge continued for a few hours until we reached fields. The mountains became shorter. The grasses in the ditch were incredibly tall - 15 feet in places. We noticed fields of sunflowers and lots of flowering bushes. The kids passed the time by playing games on their iPods. We made a few short stops along the way to stretch our legs. The temperature climbed as we made our way closer to Rome. Rows of umbrella pine trees became more and more common. 20 minutes outside of Rome we found our campsite, a neatly organized campground under the shelter of an umbrella pine forest. We felt like we were in a different world under these giants.
When we walked around we noticed a friendlier, and more lively vibe than the other campgrounds.
Live music played outside of a gelato bar where a lot of people sat around at tables with umbrellas. Kids zipped by on pedal go carts and Belia and Mariah noticed kids on a bungee trampoline. Behind the gelato bar they had a mock ice rink - at first it looked real but when Tim looked closer, it was actually a thick white plastic that kids tried to glide across on ice skates.
Our trailer was on the end of a row. A tall umbrella pine grew next to our deck, with a purple flowering vine climbing up the trunk. In the far distance we could see the lights of Rome at night. The crickets here were even louder than in Frejus. I can't believe something so small can be that loud.
We had pizza and lasagna at the campground restaurant, and called it a day.
