CATS & CAFES
Leaving Abu Dhabi was somewhat surreal - having planned this trip since I was 12 years old, the realization that it's finally happening hit me! As people who know me would expect, I got a little teary (Joel: What the hell are you crying for? You're meant to be happy! Tanya: I AM happy that's why I'm crying! Joel: *sigh* I don't get it?)
Flying into Ataturk airport all we both could think of was Wellington. The harbour, the strangely similar looking terminal and of course the GREEN!!!!! I think people on the bus from the airport thought I was a bit strange pointing out all the trees to everyone!
Finding our hostel proved to be a little more challenging than we had anticipated (thank goodness for friendly Turkish people who tell lost backpackers that they're walking in the complete wrong direction). Named 'The Stray Cat Hostel' we soon understood why; the streets of Istanbul are ruled by furry and exceptionally friendly feline friends (which suits this future 'cat-lady' just fine!) After getting our bearings, we spent the day exploring the bustling Beyoglu district. Taksim Square and the surrounding streets are unbelievably busy at night and we enjoyed an evening of people-watching and feasting on Turkish Delight (which incidentally lives up to its name 100%!)
It's been a busy few days checking out all the sights - the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the incredible Basilica Cistern, the Spice Souk, the enormous Grand Bazaar and the stunning views of the city from the Galata Tower, one of the oldest towers in the world. We also braved a traditional Turkish hamam which was a really unique experience ("boobie-city" according to Joel).
Istanbul is super-easy to navigate and we've spent most of our time exploring by foot; stopping in at the countless street cafes for Turkish apple tea when we're thirsty and feasting on doner kebabs in the evenings. Delicious!
High: The Basilica Cistern - we stumbled upon this having mistaken the entrance for a WC … and what a WC it was!
Low: The realization that my shoulders are going to need some serious strengthening in order to cope with my bazillion-ton pack!
