High hopes but a disappointing start
Last night was the first of our ventures in our quest to find a good curry house in Sydney. Knowing what a bad rep for Indian food Sydney has, I reached straight for the The Sydney Morning Herald's good food guide 2010 + picked one of their best. Flavour of India had a good write-up, but if that's what's classed as a good curry... London, we're coming home.
Overall, we rated it a disappointing 3/10. The restaurant itself was nice, great decor etc. But let's face it, you'd rather have a good curry than nice woodwork. We ordered the one Indian beer they had, Taj Mahal, and it was pish. Again, curry without a good Indian beer? No thanks. Unfortunately the only thing to do was move on to the Aussie beers, which are also pish.
However, our hopes were raised substantially when the starters arrived. Onion bhaji for me and somosas for Dave - both were very good. But then the service got a bit scatty + we had to wait ages every time we wanted a beer and no matter how many times Dave asked for a Carlton, he got a Crown beer.
Next up the curries. A lamb rogan for Dave and pumpkin curry for me. Knowing the Aussie palate is not one for heat, I ordered my curry hot. Unfortunately both curries were tasteless and we were left very disappointed. The garlic naan was ok, but the only rice on the menu was basmati and a request for mushroom rice got a firm no.
The final insult for poor old Dave was no chocolates with the bill, at which point he downgraded to 2/10. However, I feel there is worse to come and we need the scope, so have kept it at 3.
We returned home to knowing smiles from our hosts, Lou + Gid. Gid wished us luck on our quest, but you could tell from his look of pity, he'd seen it all before. However, we will not give up + the search continues. Watch this space + think of us whenever you have a curry... x
