Today's a little cooler, high teens to low twenties and mostly overcast. We meandered through cute seaside towns.
We stopped at a place advertising eggs and bought a dozen, all different shapes, sizes and colours; one egg was even green! The asking price at the egg stall was $4 a doz but with no change we paid $5, still a good deal I think, at least one of the eggs is equivalent to two normal ones.
There were a lot of market gardens in between the towns with, in some cases, dozens of farm hands furiously harvesting the cabbages and strawberries. At one farm they had a ute selling strawberries across the road from where they were picked. It was Little Pete's Farm Fresh Strawberries so of course we had to stop :-) they were 2lb punnets of the most delicious strawberries ever, sooo good. There was nobody manning the truck and no price shown just a small box with a few small bills weighted by a pair of secateurs. We had nothing by way of money smaller than $50's other than a $5 bill so thats what we left, hope it was ok.
We came to the Vandenberg Air Force Base, there's supposed to be planes flying today but we didn't see any :-( Later just out of Oxnard we saw a lone AWACS and an unknown military jet but that was it for the plane spotting today. They were probably from either the local Naval Base or Air National Guard.
After the AFB came a federal jail and from there or a time it was more SoCal canyon country than sea vistas as the road went a little inland.
Without warning we popped up a hill and there was the coast complete with grey skies and off shore oil rigs.
We stopped just short of Santa Barbara and Pete made some calls and sent some emails sorting out replacement cutters etc for those that were stolen in Nanaimo. We're getting the, shipped to our hotel in LA so, fingers crossed they get there in a timely manner.
We turned once more off the hwy at Santa Barbara and drove through a Sanctuary Cove like community. The main difference was the golf course water hazards were dry! The greens were green but clearly the drought is really biting here. Many of the mansions along there had employees working on their gardens. The mansions on the right have their own private beaches, poor b*****s lol
Out of that enclave it was more normal, schools, modest bungalows etc. probably still not cheap but more normal with nice beaches with public access. Looking out we could see the Channel Islands in the distance with lots of oil rigs dotting the ocean. The beaches are reminiscent of Santa Monica etc, volley ball nets, palm trees etc.
At the start of the Vietnams Memorial Hwy dozens of RV's were parked up at the side of the road, seemingly camping right on the beach, not sure if it was strictly legit or not but they had a pretty top spot. The beaches are great here, some with houses literally right on the beach to the degree that many had their foundations in the tide!
We loved the coastal road and reluctantly turned at Santa Monica pier to head east, inland to the city through the heavy traffic to our hotel :-(
After checking in we emptied the car, multiple bags that all need condensing over the next few days in ready to heading home in four days. We did some laundry and went walking to a liquor store, turned out the one we were to,d about by the guy on the front desk was called "d*** Liquor" lmao too funny!
Back at the hotel we had some dinner, a few drinks and settled in for the night.
