Mana pools, 2nd outdoor camp
Up predawn in an attempt to find the lions but they were not ready to end their honeymoon so we returned to camp to enjoy a magnificent sunrise, full cooked breakfast alongside the river then with anticipation for another great day we slipped into our canoes and paddled forth.
Today we are paddling through the widest part of the river and along some channels teeming with bird life. Our pace is leisurely although from time to time there is a hippo or croc alert and we have to paddle fast close to the bank or at an angle out to the middle of the river... These moments are always 'interesting' for those without a guide with them as often we loose direction or momentum or both.. I was very appreciative of our Whanganui river canoe experience. The heat is intense so we stop frequently for lovely cold drinks in the shade. Back on the river our pace allows great bird photography opportunities and Simi is able to identify all the species. We stop for another gourmet burger lunch and rest under some acacia trees alongside the river overlooking one of the many very green islands. Simi suddenly points ... Look and before our eyes 13 elephants stroll down the bank, across the channel to the greenery & start drinking, munching & playing. There was a 3mnth old calf with them and it's antics had us in hysterics ... It would run from adult to adult , trip over on its face & generally act like a typical 'toddler'.
Soon it was time to paddle to camp. The wind had come up a bit so it was more challenging paddling but the current helped and soon our camp appeared. Well, if last nights location was wow, this one was amazing!!!!
We were even closer to the river bank and after a short game drive we settled for the sunset over the river complete with reflections.
Given the fact that the camp setting up party had had vehicle issues it's doubly amazing that our showers are ready and another delish 3 course meal conjured up. After dinner we enjoyed an even clearer night time sky. Plans have been made to give Simi a lift to Kariba tomorrow so there is more flexibility with timing.
Breakfast is at 6am then we are off to try & spot wild dogs. There is a known den in the area that the BBC are filming a documentary on.
Another wonderful family day.
