Sophie's Round the World Trip

Agra, India

Thursday 6 March 2008

Rishikesh was so much fun. Yoga was refreshing and a lovely way to wake up and helped keep us calm as a stressful booking trains session followed. We managed to book all the trains for the rest of India, once we'd done that we headed of water rafting! We had to get a motorbike to the place where you get on the boat. Well the bike ride was enough of an adventure for me and emma really! I think we screamed more on the bike than we did on the raft! Water rafting was a great way of seeing Rishikesh and at the same time it's really fun when you hit the rapids. We were on the boat with all boys me and emma the only girls and when we hit out first rapid the boys were screaming and shouting and i though '###&**%$%^ im gonna die in the Ganges!" but after it happened a few times I realised that the boys were just being boys playing out a little emergency/adventure/water rafting act. Me and Emma left them to it every now and then pretended to row and enjoyed the scenery and the lovely weather. I say we pretended to row but we pretended for 10 km and by the end our arms were killing!

In the evening we were invited to a spiritual mans dinner party along with other people from our hotel and some local people. It wasnt exactly the sort of party we're used to but it was fun and intresting all the same and nice to talk to other people. When i come back to India I will head for Rishikesh and places similar.

We've had to get on a lot of early morning trains and still have a few more to come, in theory they seem like a good idea but in practise not such a good idea. Neither me or emma are particularly great morning people and getting up in the early hours for a trains usually results in both of us refusing to talk for about the first 3 hours. Also India is not the easy to stomach in the morning... on so many levels. I think early trains should be avoided in the future!

Also I have a new understanding for people who buy imported food when they're on holiday. I never really understood it before but over the weeks im ashamed to say i've brought Toblerone, Kelloggs cornflakes, Mcvites biscuits, Cadburys chocolate, Tropicana juice, Oreo cookies (i dont even buy them at home because there imported!... )the food situation is getting desperate and i find myself more and more often dreaming about my dads dinners, Marice's noodles, The Devonshire's prawns... I havent eaten meat in 2 weeks!

Changing the subject onto something much sadder. We witnessed something particularly disturbing on a platform waiting for the train that was taking us to Agra. A man was on the tracks as the train approached and got electrocuted. A lot of people tried to pull him of the tracks but unfortunately it was too late and he died. It was very close to where we were standing and when we got on the train we both got straight into our sleepers and slept of the shock.

Agra has been fantastic very Taj Mahal orientated for us. We spent most of today at the Taj Mahal just looking at it and sitting in the grounds reading. It really is breath taking. 2morow we're beginning our trip back to Mumbai so that we can catch our flight to Thailand.
