Hi all! We made a last-minute change to our itinerary and decided to stopover at Willare Bridge Roadhouse, with the idea of getting to Broome early the next morning. It was a hot and sticky drive from Fitzroy Crossing and when we saw that the campground at Willare Bridge had a pool and lovely green grassy sites, we were sold! I was stoked to find out that the washing machines were free (tragic I know, but after paying $4 a load nearly everywhere else it was very exciting!) We cooled off at the pool, had a drink and a chat with the locals and headed off for an early night. Well, the locals had other plans, they partied all night and had only finished up just before we got up at 5am. Yes, 5am .... Smiley was keen on an early start! We achieved a personal best with packing up and were on the road before 6.30.
It was about a 2 hour drive into Broome, we made our way straight to the Tourist Info and asked about caravan park vacancies. They weren't very reassuring but said we could either pick a park and line up outside or try to get into an overflow park later in the morning. Wow, busy place! Anyway we looked at one park but it looked full so off we went to Cable Beach as we had been told by some Grey Nomads that the park there was excellent. The sign out the front said no vacancies but Smiley decided to go in and ask anyway. He came out grinning his head off, he had got us in for 2 nights! Ripper! We were in and set up by 10am then we hit the beach. After a month of travelling inland we were hanging to see the ocean. The beach didn't disappoint, although the water was chillier than we had expected. Spent the arvo generally exploring the town, which has loads of very nice pearl retailers to have a look at. Drove out to Gantheaume Point, where there are dinosaur footprints which are visible at low tide. No one had any luck finding them, so we had to be content with looking at the concrete footprint casts at the top of the cliff.
The next day we decided to drive The Beast onto Cable Beach to have a go at surf fishing. No luck there, but it was fun to have a bit of a look around. That evening was the first Stairway to the Moon, which occurs during a full moon when the moon rises over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay during a low tide. The resulting effect is a reflection cast which gives the impression of a stairway linking the mudflats to the moon. It was amazing to see, unfortunately the photos don't really do it justice.
Anyway, my Smiley sweet-talked his way into booking 3 more nights here for us, so we could have a bit more of a look around. Headed off to Willie Creek Pearl Farm for a look, which also gave us a chance to do a bit of off-road driving. Willie Creek was beautiful, and very hot! The azure blue water looked so inviting but they have a resident salty, so we decided to heed the warnings, look at the pearls and head back to the beach.
I did find out an interesting fact about the northern part of Cable Beach where we were allowed to do our 4wding and fishing.....that part of the beach is clothing optional. I found out the hard way while going for a walk up the beach, had to keep my eyes down to the ground and that is all I wish to say on this subject!
Smiley had a bit of luck with his fishing, caught a decent sized Giant Trevally, which went down a treat dusted with Lime and Cracked Pepper flavoured salt and cooked in foil, yum! He also took a tumble on the rocks but only copped a few cuts and scratches and slightly dented pride. I patched him up, ably assisted by Nurse Jess and he will live to see another day due to our TLC.
Anyway, our time here in Broome has come all to quickly to an end. We are a bit sad to be leaving and may even check with Reception tomorrow to see if we can book one more night. If so, tomorrow will be a day at the beach, if not we will head towards Derby and through to Windjana Gorge.
