Kronborg Castle
After a very tasty breakfast including cereal, yoghurt, local cheeses & meats, very European, which I am enjoying the great body fuel & coffee. We caught the local train to Copenhagen Central, changed trains and made our way to Helsingor. We walked around the foreshore where we saw Sweden across the water, approximately 10 kilometers. Rod took advantage of the local library and downloaded amazing photos onto the RoChDa Offexploring site, Chris purchased our coffees and Danish whilst I chatted to the Librarian.
A short stroll across a waterway and we arrived for one of Rod's bucket list. We entered the outer grounds of Kronborg Castle (Hamlet's Castle) where yearly performance are held performed by acclaimed actors as Richard Burton. The Castle is imposing as it sits atop its own island on a high embankment surrounded by a moat, and the harbour around it.
The architecture, sandstone, turrets, gargoyles and copper roof were magnificent; we circumnavigated our way around the outside with the beautiful castle high above us. We crossed the moat into the entrance passing huge wooden entry doors, there were doors within doors.
After cloaking we made our way up sandstone circular steps to the first level and walked through the King's Chambers, the King's study where Royal taxes were collected and the Royal wax seal on documents which were then sewn into leather pouches. We passed through the Queen's Chambers, and then made our way to the Royal Ballroom where 23 course meals were served for weddings and special occasions.
We left this rich piece of history behind us as we walked back to our train station for the two trains back to our accommodation for a rest.
