Three weeks since the last blog update and so much to talk about...
We are currently off work for 4 days for the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese equivalent to Harvest, where people celebrate thanksgiving, gathering and prayer. The festival takes place during a full moon, everywhere is decorated with lanterns and the delicacy 'mooncake' is eaten. On Friday night we held an event at school and the children and their parents could attend and take part in various carnival stalls, great fun and the children looked adorable in their traditional chinese dress.
Also in the last few weeks, we took a trip to Stanley. This is my mum's favourite place to visit when she comes to Hong Kong and I now know why! The place is really relaxed with a beach, waterfront pier and is also famous for its markets. Lauren and I sat on the rocks by the waterfront catching a tan before heading around the markets. Before we left we sat in an English pub on the waterfront for dinner, fish and chips for me and a burger for her.... a little taste of the UK/US.
We have also taken a trip to Clear Water Bay beach which is around 15minutes from our apartment, many families and beautiful scenery.
So it has also been my birthday since I last wrote on here. Thank you all so much for your kind messages and especially for the lovely parcels which came as a huge surprise in the post, really overwhelmed! The day before my birthday we went for dinner with a number of the other teachers from the school and also the Principal. It was lovely to get to know everyone better outside of the work environment and enjoy some goldfish bowl sized cocktails! I thought that my actual birthday was going to be a bit of an anti-climax with being in school all day but I couldn't have been more wrong! As well as all of my class singing happy birthday to me, Lauren had arranged a really lovely evening. We had Winnie the Pooh party hats, she made a picnic and we spent the evening with a bottle of wine, music and just great company.... topped off with the purchase of One Direction tickets (13 going on 23!). I honestly couldn't ask for a better flatmate, she really is one of the nicest people I've ever met even if my language is now turning American! The evening after my birthday was also payday...hooray! We met up with the other girls and went for dinner at a restaurant called Beef and Liberty.. the best burgers in town! The girls had told the waiter that it was my birthday and so my pudding arrived with a candle in it and everyone sang... so embarrasing but lovely!
Last weekend we went to Macau; a former Portugese Colony and famous for the number of casinos. The place is a cross between Europe and Las Vegas. We didn't have much time and are definitely looking to book to go for a whole weekend. We went to the Venetian area which has a canal, gondola ride and even fake sky on the ceiling...pictures can be found in the album section. The place was so surreal but the atmosphere was great and we sat in the equivalent of St Marks Square for dinner.
School is going really well, the children are now full time and we have a few younger children just starting the class. The older children have been with us for nearly 4 weeks now and the improvement and development in such a short space of time is so rewarding to see. One of the children arrived in full Liverpool kit last Friday for the non-uniform day... he definitely did well in bagging a few favouritism points!
Tomorrow we're off to Disneyland to relive our childhood so I'll finish the blog here for now and head for an early night.
I hope that everyone is well at home, missing you. xxx
