The hotel owners are a older couple, they do everything in the small hotel and are so lovely. Last night Matthew was going to head out across the road to get us two more bottles of water and they insisted that we take the bottles of water they had, don't worry they were all sealed and safe. She told Matt that she was our Am'mã while we stay here. She has been so kind and helpful. She was up early that morning preparing our breakfast of toast, bananas, melon, rice, dhal curry, coconut roti and spiced green beans. It was delious and she made it all herself.
We booked a tuk tuk with her to take us to Sigiria Lion Rock, we have been looking forward to this from the start of our trip! The tuk tuk driver drove us out of town through quieter roads with lots of tourist attractions on them that the driver was telling us about. He loved asking questions about how much something costs in Britain and was shocked each time. Sri Lanka is quiet a poor country ii comparison to the UK and you can tell when you are buying things from shops or getting a tuk tuk or eatting out. Our 40 minute tuk tuk ride cost £4.20 equating to 850 sri lankan rupees.
The rock was amazing, its the rock from the picture, a huge palace hundreds of years ago was built on the top of the rock, around it are remains of lavish water gardens created for the palace. You have to walk up 1200 steps to get to the top, but its worth it. Most of the access points and steps are metal ones created for the tourists as the old ones have worn away. The last stairs up are the reason it is called Lion Rock, two huge lions paws have been carved into the rock, i can imagine there must have been a face at sometime. The views from the top are stunning but the heat is exhausting so we were pretty sweaty after. We saw lots of wildlife as well lizards, chameleons, iguanas and eagles. There was so much more but its hard to describe without pictures and photos, in going to put somen the photos section. We are glad we did it, and all before the midday sun! We definetly relaxed for the rest of the day after.
