Much has happened in the last few days leaving me wiser and a little more cautious. A few hard and fast rules: 1. Contrary to what I had always heard, Parisians are very kind and helpful (some must have been laughing at my lack of ability to direct myself in the city), though they often have no idea how to get places in their own city. 2. When you need to get somewhere in a hurry you will inevitably get lost. The more urgent it is, the more lost you will get. 3. The best way to eat is simply and out of the grocery store. 4. A cell phone is very very helpful when travelling. Especially when trying to meet with friends while being lost. I must note here that I do not currently own such a device. 5. Pencil skirts look nice but make it very difficult to hop a fence. There are many more, but they'll have to wait for another time.
I have seen the Tour de France, the Louvre, the Sacre Coeur, the Eifel Tower (all lit up at night), Montmartre (and many areas of Paris whilst being totally lost), Notre Dame, markets, nice people, crazy people, the police station (damn pickpocketers) and so so much more. I have also met some great people from all over the world. One of my favorite moments so far was wandering through the streets of Montmartre with a gang of Californians, drinking wine on the steps of the Sacre Coeur at night, and hanging out on a balcony at the hostel with people from Australia, California, Vancouver and Birmingham. It's been a whirlwind. Oh, and the Velib bikes are amazing, though many of them are broken at least a little.
Tomorrow I leave for Rome. I look forward to reaching Belvedere on the 31st and relaxing on the beach for a month. I am tired, but having lots of fun.
