Having left the blinds open last night we wake up at 05:30 to a magnificent sunrise. The wind in the vines sounds like rain but the sky is blue as far as the eye can see. The view at breakfast is fabulous; light green coloured vines with brown stalks stretching away to the horizon in perfectly straight rows.
After a friendly goodbye we left at 10:40 heading for St. Emillon, but when we got there we couldn't find any parking closer than a mile and a half from the town so we drove away through endless vineyards to La Reole where we found an aire overlooking the river and railway. We ate a long and leisurely lunch in the hot sunshine then set off at 15:20 in search of an aire both Ali and Grete had read about in a magazine. Our route took us along peaceful roads through the villages of Fontet, Hure, Meilhan-surGaronne, Bernes and Pont-des-Sables often driving alongside the Canal lateral a la Garonne, or crossing over it on narrow bridges. In the hedges were mares tails and celandines, while the fields were mainly fruit bushes with bird netting stretched over them.
We arrived at the aire at Caumont sur Garonne at 16:20, crawling across the single track bridge and down onto the towpath of the canal, past the 12 or 15 motorhomes already there, forcing a couple of anglers to move, until we parked side by side between the trees facing directly onto the canal.
Grete took Clio for a walk, Nick and Ali went for a walk on the towpath and Nick W got out his fishing rod to mimmick the anglers, but only caught a tin of Tesco sardines. Ali was so excited to have found this place that she popped a bottle of champagne at tiffin time. Then we sat out in the cool breeze under the trees, waving to a couple of canal boats while we had our supper.
