After another night of broken sleep on the train, we arrived back at Cozy at about 8am just as the receptionist was opening the doors! We didn't have to wait too long before we could get into our room and have a much needed shower!
Laura and I needed to get a few things from MBK shopping centre, so after a short rest we were off to find a taxi, leaving Chris behind at the hotel to get his stuff sorted for his journey home tomorrow. We managed to get a taxi straight away - no drivers refusing to use the meter this time! Inside, we hunted out some cheap Birkenstocks for Laura that she'd had her ey on since were here last time; we also picked up a pair for Dawn! It took a few trips between stalls but we eventually go them for 200 baht per pair (about £4!) after haggling the stall holder down from 650 baht!
For lunch we stopped off at Burger King (very Thai) before heading for the skytrain. We were planning a visit to the Snake Farm and intended to get the underground train after the skytrain. However, when we went through the scanner after buying our tokens, we were stopped and told that we couldn't' get on as we were carrying explosives…in the form of a can of deoderanta dn a can of mosquito spray that we'd just purchased! So we trudged back out of the station and decided to walk - the snake farm was meant to be near the next station along the track, so we expected a short walk - wrong! By the time we found the place we were almost ready to give up and flag a taxi but we made it!
On our way in, we had to walk past the Memorial Hospital and were stopped by a guard who was watching the entrance to the hospital quite nervously. There was a red carpet outside so there must have been an important visitor about to arrive, but we didn't see anyone (we probably wouldn't have recognised them anyway!) and the guard soon let us go on our way to the snakes. It turned out to be a worthwhile stop - we were just in time for a snake handling demo and got to see the handlers bring out King Cobras, Pythons and other native Thai snakes, some of which were very venomous! The woman who was explaining each snake made us laugh with her English pronunciation but her English was very good and learnt a lot. At the end of the show, we were invited to take photos while holding a Golden Burmese Python - pretty scary at the time but a brilliant picture!
After the long walk back to the hotel we were ready for another shower and a rest! In the evening we headed out for Chris's last night in Thailand, intending to re-visit the Indian restaurant we'd found on our second night. Our taxi dropped us off and we didn't recognise the road but we thought he'd just dropped us at the other end of Khao San Road. We soon discovered that we were on a completely different street with no idea of where Khao San Road was! We tried asking a Thai lady for directions but she just pointed back in the direction of the street we were dropped off on! We seriously began to wonder whether they'd changed the streets and their names since we were last there, or whether we were never on Khao San Road when we thought we were a couple of weeks ago! Later, through the power of Chris's iPhone we found out that we were on the street parallel to Khao San, but the streets are such a maze that we had no idea how to get there! Luckily, we like the new Khao San even better - quieter, lots of nice restaurants and bars and none of the chaos!
We ended up eating in a different Indian restaurant which turned out to be just as good as the one we'd originally intended to visit! Afterwards, we found a bar called Chill Out and we did exactly that for the rest of the night, listening to the live acoustic guitarists. We got chatting to a guy called Alun Davies (no relation to Jonathan Creek) from Wales, who told us some amazing stories from his travels, and later on we were joined by one of the guitarists who called himself Ozzie! We had a fantastic night and it was a fitting end to our adventures together in Thailand.
Chris has a 5am taxi tomorrow (nice!) to the airport and we're off to Laos on the sleeper train…
