We got a coach for $1.50 direct from San Salvador to Santa Ana.
Santa Ana is El Salvador's second largest city renowned for its cathedral and theatre dating back to 1890s.
Both lived up to the billing, especially the theatre which was amazing.
However, Santa Ana is even more renowned for Casa Verde on the backpacking trail. A hostel which carried the lofty reputation of being Central America's best hostel amongst backpackers: and it definitely lives up to its title. Awesome pool with volleyball net and basketball ring, endless selection of movies, great kitchen, great dorms with plugs and mini light at each bed. And that's without mentioning the owner, Carlos. A lovely guy who went out of his way to make us feel at home. He needlessly dropped us to our bus on the last day for Suchitoto as he was afraid we wouldn't find it.
There are some great cafes in Santa Ana: namely Cafe Tejas and Simmer Down. Simmer Down was one of the best lunches of our trip so far!
We hiked Cerro Verde volcano which features a breathtaking azul lake in its crater which you could see bubbling from the heat. This was a pretty easy 1.5 hour hike up; especially in context of Acatenango.
For the first time on our trip, we dined in cooking spaghetti bolognese and spaghetti with tuna on 2 of our 3 nights there.
After 3 nights at Cass Verde, it was time to move reluctantly onwards to Suchitoto.
With Carlos's help, we did this via 3 chicken buses leaving at 9 and arriving at 2.30pm.
