They say Guatemala has Antigua, Nicaragua has Grenada and El Salvador has Suchitoto as their colonial jewels.
We arrived at 2.30 pm and just in time to check into our El Gringo hostel and make it to the police station for the 3pm tour to Los Tercios falls:
The cops here escort you to a waterfall about 2km outside of town. It was a bit of a novelty waiting in the army barracks with people equipped more for a war than a tourist trip.
We hitched the lift in the back of a police truck with a guy in handcuffs coming along for the ride.
The falls are visited for their unique columnar form reminiscent of the Giant's Causeway.
After this, we had pupusa's for dinner and had a good chat with a local guy who grew up in LA for a bit.
We had the hostel to ourselves.
We missed out on what sounds like a great horse trip into the mountains to see guerrilla camps and also the ecotour at Cinquera which is run by ex guerrillas. Next time!
We hung around for lunch and then grabbed a chicken bus for San Salvador and a return to Joan's for the evening!
It was to be a short stay in San Salvador this time as we had to be up at 2am to catch a cab to the bus station for our 3am tica bus to Leon, Nicaragua ($50).
We managed to fit in a tour of the Romero Centre in San Salvador university before departing which was excellent but tragic and quite graphic in its depiction of the murder of 5 Jesuit priests on the site.
