I am not sure why I am still functioning on Eastern Time. I am up at 5:30 here which is 7:30 back home and by 8pm I am struggling to stay awake. My head is bopping as I write these posts. I did manage to fall back asleep this morning, so it looks like I may make it to 9:30 today.
The sites today were all about history which I have to admit I was not into when I was younger. As it turns out I married a history buff, Gil just soaks it all in and I have enjoyed learning from him. I browse through it only focusing on things that catch my attention, while he takes his time and I patiently wait. He then fills in the blanks for me as we discuss what we have seen.
The first site today was the Crazy Horse Memorial. It's a monument they are trying to carve out of a mountain in honor of a Native American hero. Progress on the monument is slow and only the face is fully completed. They only use donation money. It seems to me that all the rich Native American Chief Casino owners should put up the funds required to get a bigger crew so they can finish it. It should be really nice when completed, but at the pace is going I am not sure my children will get to see it finished in their life time. We watched the film and rode the bus that gets you closer to the monument. They allow you to take rocks from the site as a souvenir which are pure granite.
After lunch at their restaurant we drove to Mt. Rushmore. We visited this monument 8 years ago, but it was a quick stop. We were on our way home from Washington State. We arrived about 7pm hungry and after dinner in their cafe we watched the 9pm Ranger presentation and lighting of the monument.
Today we wanted to see everything we missed. We hiked the President's trail which gets you closer to the monument. Visited the sculpting studio and the museum.
Back at the RV we ran into a problem that turned out to be nothing. We turned on the lights and they were dim. That is when we noticed our house batteries were almost dead. We are connected to shore power and it's coming in fine. Gil checked the battery connections and the fuses which were also fine. It turned out the converter charger was not plugged in, easy fix. Who knows how long it had been unplugged.
We played cards after dinner and I am now in bed writing this. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and rain predicted the rest of the days here. We will do our last fully outdoor site tomorrow to take advantage of the good weather.
