A perfect day for our last day at the beach. We set off and went to the top of Cape Palinuro for some photos. We then drove down to the port to take a grotto boat tour. Only a short wait and once on the water in our little boat with 4 other tourists and the boatman we set off around the Cape.
First stop was the blue grotto (Grotta Azzura) and it was so beautiful. You enter by way of a cave entrance in the cliff and it is big enough to turn once you're deep in the cavern. The sea is the most incredibly bright aqua blue which is caused by a fissure in the Rock and refracted light. We then went on to the blood grotto which looks as if blood is running down the walls inside - caused by ferrous oxide in the rocks. Then around to the sulphur cave which was a bit smelly but we were able to get into the opening, something quite rare.
We went around the Cape further past rabbit island to a small bay where we could stop for a swim. Mili jumped in but Sonia and I stayed in the boat. There were a lot of boats with people tied up and taking advantage of the beautiful day and a last swim of the holiday season. We then headed back to the port and the boatman was kind enough to take us back into the blue grotto for another look. It was a very interesting 2 hour trip and worth the small cost.
Off to the profundo for a swim so we found a free park and headed down to the beach. The water was very calm and we floated around for a long time and decided we're not returning to Australia as it is too beautiful here. Wishful thinking of course. We headed up to the small cafe for lunch and enjoyed a small meal. Back into the water and much hilarity followed with some abandoned beach toys and a Li Lo Mili was trying to get on. I found a Barbie boogie board which tethered nicely to the buoy line and allowed me a ring side seat of the water and beach until Mili decided she wanted it. Some good natured scuffling and fun followed but I have it up in the interests of self preservation. We swam some more then retired to the beach for a last sit in the sun by the Mediterranean.
We drove back to the villetta all feeling nicely toasted and salty and after a welcome shower had a rest before Zio Ugo arrived to take us out to dinner. We went on a 30 minute drive down the mountain to Alfano and a lovely restaurant called Taverna del Sol. The food was really good and we started with a plate of mixed hot antipasto which included mozzarella balls, tiny tomato pastries and potato croquettes. We then all had some pasta, I chose tagliatelle with speck, cheese and truffles. It was delicious but when Zio asked us about next course we all were too full. Zio got a bottle of local wine so I could try it, it was a delicious earthy red, very pleasant. We opted for some Dolce (sweets) and a crepe with vanilla icecream inside and a lovely fruit sauce on top was chosen. Very nice indeed. We headed home feeling sleepy and full, Zio is a wonderful host and looked after us well.
