Yesterday we had an active day, starting off with breakfast (fresh peaches for me) then headed off to the village hardware store to get the prepaid broadband sim recharged, did so with some fun with the language! We then headed off to have a look around the surrounding areas, down a small road to where gardens are everywhere, we stopped at the Melandrini (water spout from mountain springs all down the mountain) filling up our water bottles with cold crystal clear water. We then drove along the Strada del Sol - the road that the US marched along from the toe of Italy liberating the towns as they went - another interesting story from the region. We stopped at a village called Cuccaro Vetere and took some photos - beautiful place, very clean and pretty then headed back to Montano for lunch and a siesta. In the evening we headed off to the Sagra - local village festival with lots of amazing food, great music and lots of people. This is set in the forest above the village and is held every year. The food was beautiful, home made fusilli with a tomato sauce, zucchini flowers in fine batter, eggplant parmagiana and I tried the Sofrito which is a tomato based stew with finely cubed meat. Delcious! Zio Ugo brought us a tray filled with delicious cakes and pastries - my favourite was a Peche de Crema which is a little round cake shaped like a peach, covered in pink sugary crystals and filled with a cream centre. This will not be my last one of those, that's for sure... there was also cannolli, zeppoli, castanache which is a little chestnut pastry.
We enjoyed some excellent Neapolitan music and after we had eaten we went behind the scenes to where the village ladies were doing all the work, they were very busy turning out all the food on offer but they made time to come and say hello to Sonia and meet Mili and I. I got a lot of double cheek kisses, they are such lovely people - such a strong community here, lots of traditions still go on. I couldn't be happier - I see why Sonia loves this place so much.
