We decided to make use of our Hop on, Hop off bus tickets today which will allow us to get over to Liberty Island to visit Lady Liberty herself. We snap a few pictures along the way and stop off to visit the 9/11 memorial site and tribute centre. The water fountains they have erected in the foundation sites of the twin towers are really beautiful and the inscribed names all around the outside definitely make you realise the sheer number of victims claimed that day. We had tickets for the Tribute centre but I was a bit worried about taking Sienna there so we headed that way and seeing other children there decided we would have a look. Wow, the emotion you feel when walking through there is massive. Reading the recounts from that day was heartbreaking but what brought me to tears was the wall containing posters which were hung at the time by families looking for loved ones. They showed pictures of the missing, their name and who was trying to find them. So many faces: black, white, old, young, married, single, man, lady...heartbreaking to read a note written by a parent and children who were desperately seeking the other parent. Especially when the reality is that most perished. The stories of escape and rescue were also amazing and both girls had many questions about what they were seeing and reading.
Back on the bus, we head to the ferry to visit Liberty Island. Unfortunately, 2 things are not in our favour today; it is looking like rain and the Statue climb is all booked out for the day. Oh well, rain and climb aside we catch the ferry, do a lap of the statue and head back to the ferry to escape further rain. The statue is bigger than I expected when you finally get up close. We hop back on the bus...last one of the day and pop on a poncho for the trip home.
Also today we managed to visit the American Girl doll store which is like nothing we have ever seen before. This place is three stories of little girl heaven!! There are dolls galore, doll clothes galore, girls clothes to match the doll clothes, accessories everywhere including doll wheelchairs, crutches, bicycles, beach chairs, entire bedroom settings, pets for the dolls and more. There is the doll salon to have their hair done, the doll hospital for if they need work, the cafe to have lunch with your doll and in Sienna's words, even the toilets have special doll holders for your doll!! Oh my god, The prices....I gotta start the Australian Girl doll store!!! Anyway, we managed to leave this toy store with our wallets firmly still in our bags as well. That's 2 for 2. Good job girls. We even manage an early night. Hooray!!
