Early start and off to the airport we go. Everything goes pretty smoothly, check in, flight and then.......waiting......the bags took forever to unload at New York. People were standing around for more than 40 minutes before the carousel began delivering gear. Anyway, bags in hand we head out to grab a cab to Manhattan. We knew this would be costly but $130 was a bit more than we expected. The toll to cross the bridge is $13!!! Wow, we won't complain about Sydney's tolls again. Anyway, our driver was nice and he chatted about the places as we drove and explained a little about New York.
It wasn't until we were waiting in line, ready to check into our accommodation, that some mini alarm bells began to ring. I hadn't realised but Wess could hear the conversation between the hotel staff and the family of 4 in front of us. They were being told that there were no quadruple rooms left only double rooms until the next night. They would have to share 1 bed for the night. I figured they hadn't booked and so thems the breaks!!
Our turn to check in and we are given the same story!! We then realised that like us they had booked but still weren't given the room they had paid for. They refused their room and were waiting for the hotel to figure something out for them. Unlike them, I simply didn't have the patience to sit around and wait, I wanted to get a room and head out to eat. Besides they had two older children and would never fit in a bed together, we could get away with it for one night but would certainly not agree to any more. We were given a voucher to use as part reimbursement of our fee and the promise that our gear would all be moved for us the next day into the correct room. Family sleepout.....like camping in the tent really.....lol.
We did have a fantastic view of the Empire State Building from our window though!!!
Oh well, spilt milk aside, we headed out to get our first sight of this busy city. Wow, noises, lights and horns!! We wandered the streets for a while and stopped into a pizza joint for the most amazing pizza we have ever had!! Mine was chicken and broccoli and a slice cost about $3 and was A4 size with so much topping you had to pick up your plate and eat it off the side.
Sleepout time, at least the girls will get some rest, pretty sure Wess and I will be tired tomorrow!!
