Our last day in Tortuguero but a bright and sunny one. We still haven't managed to see any of the hatching turtles despite several trips along the shore and again this morning proves fruitless. The only drama is a flock of ugly black vultures tearing in to the rotting corpse of some unfortunate animal.
We head to the jetty but confusion arises as our boat pick up does not materialise as expected at 8:50am By chance we bump in to Castor at the jetty and we explain our predicament. As it happens, our local transport contact is Castor's step son who Castor manages to contact. Our transport boat, as it happens is also the boat which delivers bananas so ironically we sail out on a banana boat. We hop aboard with just minutes to spare before it chugs out on to the canal which is muddy Brown with flood water. The boat makes a couple of stops to pick up locals but something doesn't sound quite right with the engine. In fact it breaks down a couple of times on the way out and we drift awhile in the currents which are fairly strong because of the heavy rains. Eventually, with the help of a passing fisherman who is called over to assist from his small boat, a repair is successful and we make it to port and to me the connecting bus at La Pavona and our onward 4 hour bus journey to Fortuna
