An early rise for a walk in the jungle is cut short when the heavens open and the rains pour with such force that within seconds everything is soaked. There are similar downpours all day with a few bright spells. Apparently it's been like this for all of December. We were obviously very lucky the previous day.
Luckily we have sheltered balcony at our Hostal so we can sit out there and watch the world go by. In the evening we walk to the Buddha cafe restaurant, owned by a Chilean and serving excellent food.
The owner tells us that in November, the entire 1600 inhabitantsof the village were evacuated (save for a dozen or so brave souls) in anticipation of hurricane Otto. This is the first time a hurricane has been recorded in Costa Rica since records began in 1851. Fortunately the hurricane missed the village.
He's delighted to hear that we are returning to his restaurant having been here 8 years previously. He is aware of only one other returning customer after 16 years in running the place. Not I hasten to add, because of the food.. we found it excellent both times, but due to the remoteness of the village. Not many tourists make the effort twice to get here.
Through the night we have mighty thunder flashes one of which causes the building to shudder. Our tin roofed lodge rattleseems all night with the downpour and it's like sleeping inside a snare drum.
