The summer turned out to be all that we had hoped for (and some things that we hadn't) and more. We (especially me) learned to let go more - planning most days only a couple of days ahead of time in terms of what city we'd go, where we'd stay and what we'd do; to stare at the scenery or make new friends on long bus rides; and to do without so many of the creature comforts we take for granted at home.
It was strange to return to so many different choices of clothes, food, cosmetics etc. - but wonderful to be able to put the toilet paper in the toilet again! We keep saying "gracias" and "si" in restaurants and shops, and I miss having Zoe correct my pronunciation every other minute.
We learned a lot about ourselves and each other - getting to know our 11 and 45 year old selves in new ways and figuring out how to work really well as a team. The Buckaroo Banzai quote from the opening of our blog (Remember whereever you go, there you are) held true - we brought all of our existing strengths and weaknesses with us, but somehow the trip amplified them, providing an opportunity to really use our best parts, while contemplating how to work with the parts that feel most challenged.
For both of us, it increased our love of travel at all levels and ensured that we will prioritize time off, new adventures, and new cultures in the future - hopefully returning to Central/South America as well as finding new continents to explore.
