Today we headed off to of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to take the cog train from Elbsee up to Zugspitze (the highest peak in Germany - 2962m). After this we had to walk up stairs to the top of the peak and later via chains over rocks to the actual peak. When we exited the train we were suddenly hit with a burst of cold air, however, we explored our surroundings and proceeded up to the highest point. Here we were almost blown off the mountain - the wind was bitterly cold and fierce, needless to say we didn't make our way up to the actual peak. Close enough was fine by us.
We happened to watch a young man propose to his girlfriend who was taken aback and accepted the proposal. John waited until she had kissed him several times & wiped away her tears and then asked them if they would like him to take photos for them of the event. I explained that he had to get down on one knee again and they were happy and accepted the offer. We were all a bit teary at this stage.
We made our way down from Zugspitze via the cable car that goes straight down about 2000m, the steepest part of the mountain.
Lunch was had near the lake at the car park (about 1000m above sea level).
Before returning home we head off to Partnachklamm - a rustic natural gorge with glacial water from the Partnach River running through at high speed.
We feel like we have taken in some of Germany's natural, rugged beauty.
Today was topped off with a great meal of Austrian style schnitzel with all the trimmings at the Gasthof Panorama back at Ehrwald.
