Bonnie's African Adventures
Well, i am now into classes, and they seem like they will be amazing!! They are:
- Study of South African Wine Industy (it's only 1 credit, but it's something i'm taking for fun)
- Economic and Development of Africa and South Africa (the teacher is like 26, but it's a discussion based class with a bunch of different international backgrounds so it should be amazing)
- Afrikaans (the dutch like language that most people speak here. It will be nice to understand a bit of what everyone is saying and read signs)
- Service Learning Theory (6 hours a week spent doing service, and then two classes a week talking about community development.. it should be interesting)
umm.. so ya i spent my day reading after class in the botanical garden and stopping by the pool.
Cultural Pieces:
- pools here are a no play deal. You either swim laps or you just look at it. And if you are a guy then you have to buy shorts before getting here because speedos are all the rage
- shopping carts have guards that make sure you dont take one all the way back to our dorm, so only buy enough that you can carry
- power outages are a frequent event because one company supplies all of the electricity for the cape town area and every now and then they decide they want to turn it off to do maintence.
- iced coffee does not have ice.. it's really more like a milkshake :) and yummy
Story:
one of my german friends knows a guy who was doing AIDS education in a village down here and here's the cliff not version of a story: He was demonstrating comdoms, and didn't have anything but a stick to use as an example. So, he showed the people how to use one with a stick... A couple of days later he came buy to see sticks in the ground outside of many of the houses with the condoms properly placed on them.
Well, i am off to get some foods... peace and love from the southern hemisphere
