After brekky Gadi headed out to a different part of Karijini National Park and I settled down to enjoy another day on my own (with Cadbury for company) - yay!
When you've been on the road close to three months and you are spending 24 hours a day together, mostly on your own without others around, it's nice to occasionally have some time apart.
I spent the day baking (again), this time making an orange almond cake with black chia seeds (I had farm fresh oranges to use) and some banana oat muffins. Funny, because I am no baker, but I've had a hankering to bake the last few weeks, so today seemed like the perfect opportunity. And the bonus is that we will be well stocked on home baked goodies for the next few days!
Gadi got back to the campsite around 3pm after another great day out enjoying the beauty of Karijini. He drove to Hamersley Gorge (hour and a half on a dirt road) stopping along the way to take a quick look at the deserted ghost town of Wittenoom, a town that was set up in 1948 to mine blue asbestos - it became the biggest asbestos mine in Australia, exporting to the UK for use in WW2. It closed in the late '60s due to the health risk of the asbestos, and the town itself was degazetted and is now no longer on any map and has no electricity or other services. 4-5 people still live there but the government discourages people visiting due to the risk. Of the 7,000 workers in the mine, studies show that many became ill soon after and it is estimated at least 10% will get mesophilioma by 2020.
After a long drive, he said the gorge was amazing to swim in the cool water surrounded by huge granite cliffs.
We chilled in the late afternoon and ate a late BBQ chicken wing dinner with rice a delicious Greek salad.
We watched another episode of the Danish TV series, 1864, although I have to admit I fell asleep just before this episode finished.
Night night, sooooo tired xx
