Left our home (after 8 days) in Port Julia this morning. We are heading north towards Port Augusta and plan to make our way to the Ayre Peninsula.
We stopped first in the nearby fishing town (aren't they all!) of Ardrossen for a toilet stop and to get something delicious from the bakery. Then we drove north away from the Yorke Peninsula through Port Wakefield, Lochiel, which sits on a salt pan, and our next stop was at Snowtown. It was awful to associate Snowtown most strongly as being the town where the bodies in the barrels in the disused bank were found back in 1999. But, we discovered, it is also now synonymous with having one of the largest output wind farms in Australia. The history of the wind farm project (built in two stages) was interesting to read about on our brief stop.
We then continued our journey, stopping for lunch in Port Pirie, which is a very industrial town. Next stop was the quaint town of Port Germain, with its incredibly long jetty jutting out for over 1.5km - built especially to cater for ships and boats during low tide. Despite being just a little seaside town, this place has a sense of character that we felt missing in the larger nearby town of Port Pirie.
We pulled up for the night in Mambray Creek Rest Area and chose a spot a little further back from the highway, along what we thought was a disused railway line. Gadi went for a run and we sat in the golden afternoon sun enjoying the quiet. Our peace was disturbed by the sound of a shrill train whistle and then we were treated to the sight and sound of a long haul road train go by not 20 meters from where we were set up. It was quite a sight! Two more trains came past before we went to bed but they didn't really bother us. Watched the last episode of The Bridge - now we can finally move on to a new show.
Good night xx
