When it rains..it destroys!Cusco and Machhu Picchu are deemed under emergency for the next sixty days.In case you haven't seen the news massive downpours have caused mudslides which in return have stopped/seriously delayed travel, ruined homes, and left many with no shelter or food.
There is a group of students I've become friends with from school stuck in Aguas Caliente (the town that lodges those going to Machhu Picchu). Not only are they stuck there awaiting their turn to be airlifted out, hotels & hostels have increased their prices leaving many locals without anywhere to stay, and are selling rooms to the highest bidders. There is also limited food and water for those who continue to be stranded.I know that the tourists will be okay but I feel for the locals who seem to be getting the short end of the stick.I think the government is trying to cover their behinds by getting the tourists out as quickly as possible but with that being said it's not that quick as three days have passed and the students still aren't back.
All of us students here at Amautau are being advised not to travel anywhere for at least the next week which is a bummer as my time here in Peru is coming to close very shortly, however, quite meaningless in comparison to the families here who have lost everything.
Once again, I'm very much aware of how fortunate I am for being blessed with the life I have when seeing smaller incidents such as this to large scale ruins in Haiti to constant fighting in the Middle East.Blessings to all around the world.
