Port Arthur is the oldest prisoner area in Aussie during British colonial times. The convicts were exiled to this area, working as labourers and forming their own communities. Here, we saw the different facilities for the time when the convicts were imprisoned and the officials (guards, soldiers, medical officers etc. Places like the commander's house, hospital, visiting government official house, guard tower, medical officer house, "pauper and invalid" house, the main jail, and the separate prison (where prisoners were kept in a cell each for 23 hrs each day, and in total silence- no talking no singing no shouting) Some of the original buildings were not around anymore cos of bush fires. But most of them remain, though not totally intact.
