Now in Belgium , in flat Flanders after the many hills in NE France. Coffee stops in towns with cobbled streets and always flowers in boxes and gardens, and no graphiti or litter. campsite at Niewport packed with families--we are in our little CTC ghetto in a corner. Plenty of relics from WWI on the way and yesterday we visited the remains of the huge factory where the VI and V2 rockets were produced and launched in WW2 . It was bombed in 1944 and fortunately put out of action--366 bombs dropped in 50 minutes--so Britain was saved from the massive V2 rockets. The visit brought back memories from that time and the sound effects were very realistic. Our campsite was in the grounds of a chateau near the site --the noise from the bombing must have been horrendous. Apparently prisoners were brought in as slave labour. The concrete structure was 80 metres in height. There were still graphic signs of the devastation from the Allied attack which used some of Barnes Wallace's earthquake bombs.
Our ride to Niewport was along the Ijzer canal and along small lanes away from traffic. We have a rest day today and are planning to cycle to the nearby beach .
