We guess most of us have the impression of New Zealand that we have gotten from the Lord of the Ring movies. During our short trip we could conclude that this country truly is as beautiful as it looks like in these films.
Auckland was packed with people because of the rugby world cup. We even got to see the famous All Blacks at a market place when the mayer of Auckland gave a speech to the team and the fans as a start for the cup. We enjoyed the haka show, the maori songs and of course the gorgeous players ;)
On our second day we picked up our "home" for the next two weeks; a motorhome called Space Ship. This is a great little car with a kitchen, bed and everything you need - it even had a DVD player. Our trip could officially begin. During the next few weeks we drove through the whole country all the way down to Queenstown and back. All was good except from the minor detail that the Kiwis drive on the other side of the road from the Europeans. We got stopped a couple of times by the police and they gave us a funny look saying something like: "oy mate can't do that in New Zealand". But we made it with only one speeding ticket, which we find pretty good considering the circumstances.
We also had a guest star with us on this lap; Jenna's boyfriend Nicke. This was very fortunate because there were many times that a mans presence felt really comforting in dodge deserted campsites with the wind wining outside and only darkness around us in the middle of nowhere. It didn't help much that we lied in the car telling each other ghost stories about killers lurking in the bushes :)
On the way we saw great little places like Taupo where Nicke and Anna jumped a 15 000 foot sky dive, Nelson where we did some awesome hiking, Franz Josef where we saw a glacier and swam in hot springs and Wanaka where we stayed with some Finnish snowboarders. In Queens town we swung in the worlds largest swing - a huge rush!! If you're heading this way we strongly recommend doing it. It was certainly much better than bungee jumping! On the way up we visited some friends in Napier, which was a cosy little town on the east cost.
We all loved this beautiful country and really enjoyed the nature and the green. There were sheep everywhere and the ocean was bright blue. The only thing that bothered us in the end of the trip was that we didn't have enough time! You could easily spend a couple of months in New Zealand. We will definitely go back!
