We hadn't disappeared, but just been enjoying the relaxation of NZ and its winter weather!! We were supposed to only be staying in NZ for a 2 week tour in our spaceship 'campercar' but decided to spend 3 so we could spend some time with Emma's reli's and recover from South America!!!!
After a couple of days relaxing with Maggie/Kerry and the boys (Brutus & Rommel) we set off on our merry way.....trying to take in as much of the North island as possible. Our first stop was the coromandel area east of auckland, with amazing beaches and coves and at this time of yera really quiet. Stayed in a couple of DOC campsites in the middle of nowhere, extremely remote but bestiful forest and bay views. A highlight was the unmaintained 20km road with huge cracks and a few landslides to go with it!
We then moved down towards the Bay of Plenty visiting Waihi and the Korengha gorge where we investigated the old gold mines (and for g's dads benefit we found a preserved railstation for lunch). The we headed for Mt Manganui for a hike up the volcano and a relaxing 40degree outdoor spa. Another highlight was graham having his head shaved!! Pictures will follow....
Deciding to go a bit off the beaten track we headed for the east cape, first place in NZ (and we think the world?) to see the sun rise. We then moved on down the coast to napier and hastings the world of wine.....and the first speeding fine! (well done emma!) Visited 4 vineyards and had some amazing local food, also climbed Te Mata peak - the easy way by car!!!
To be continued....
