Arrived in Shanghai in morning and attempted to get metro to hostel but was chaos so gave up and jumped in taxi. Once here booked into dorm and went to have a look around. Saw Rob from manchester who i had met in Beijing and he told me that vicki from Beijing was also here. That made my day because after a couple days of being in Luoyang and being limited to speaking about 10 words max in last couple days I needed some english people to have a conversation with, oh yeah not to mention they were both a fantastic laugh in Beijing. Also met a girl here called Rebecca who had been in china for 6 months studying mandarin and this was very handy that evening when we went out to get food. really funny seeing all locals gather around to listen to a western girl speaking Mandarin.
Following day had a quite one just chilling around hostel before heading out in the evening to the french concession area. Really good nightlife here and had good fun out for a few drinks with rob and vicki.
Went to financial district the next morning and this appeared to be a giant building site. We went up the pearl Oriental Tower whcih had some fantastic views although may have been better at night time when all lit up as during the day it was very smoggy and thick air with pollution. Whilst here we went and enjoyed a beer in the revolving restaurant at the top.
Got train ticket booked to Hong kong for 11/04 which vicki also booked onto. Rob had left on 10th and got a flight to Hong kong as he did not fancy the train ride of 22 hours neither did he have the time as had a flight to catch. Did all formalities at train station as although HK has now been handed back to china it is still very much treated as a seperate country. Once on board train myself and vicki wnet and found restaurant cart and had a meal. whilst in here vicki saw a group of Irish lads she had met in Beijing. We went and sat in their cabin (they had soft sleeperes!!) and drank beer and rice wine long into night listening to the music. Great fun and a great laugh and certainly helped the 22 hours on the train pass! Next stop Hong kong where i will be meeting Steve who on holiday and Ben and roz who live out here so a nice couple weeks of respite and relaxion are in order here.
