Stop.... Fiji Time
Hello all
Well after yesterday in which we finally arrived in Chile after about 23 hours awake which incidentally made it before we left New Zealand but after we left Fiji on the same day. If you think i have temporarily lost it, that is a correct statement allowing for time difference and international date line, however when Kirst asked me on arrival how long we have been travelling for my brain tried to think and then pretty much crashed... That can be the only reason I can think off for me laughing out loud when the customs dog started leaping on kirstys hand luggage in the baggage reclaim because it smelled sweets. Lovely labrador and only doing his job but i don't think kirst was happy about it...
Anyway, we arrived in fiji and got the usual attempt to sell us packages we didn't want (that asside the people were very very friendly). Having refused the sale we were still shown to the bus stop and boarded a local bus( only white faces again) to Lautoka for a bit of local life. We had decided to do some hiking in a Koraniyatu park the following day but unfortunately due to some very relaxed organisation (they were on fiji time) we had to delay it a day which meant that we just had to fill our time by going to the dean trophy Rugby Finals (like the daily mail cup in uk) with about 20,000 fijians. I was gutted I tell you .....absolutely gutted .... The first match we watched judging by the size of the players had to be about under 18's but when we checked we found it was under 16's so by the time the under 19 behemoths took the field I was very glad to be in the crowd. 5 hours of rugby in total and I was pretty much sated and Kirst had read the lonely planet from cover to cover and was claiming that I could not maintain that it was one of 'her day trips'. Proper fiji life though and we both loved it, plus all the locals we met later on were impressed we had gone.
The hiking the next day in the mountains was also very picturesque plus we got guided about by some local villagers and served lemonade with the vicar. We headed out to the Yasawas islands the following day having decided to stay at an ecoresort called WayaLailai. The set up there was much better than we had feared and not really like a resort at all. It was wholly owned by the villagers and very relaxed. We did really liked it but yes the free room upgrade to a cottage helped! We had a great stay with kirst doing much kayaking and walking and me being pretty afraid of going too far from a bathroom for two days and getting severely outclassed in beach touch rugby when I joined the locals for a run around. It appears that my inability to finish off a clean line break has followed me round the world despite the 48 hour extreme weight loss programme... no need for any comments lads!
Anyway we have now had a look around Santiago too and it seems a pretty cool city. Last night to aid the jet lag we went to la vagas gordos restaurant which cooks anything that goes moo and between us we consumed about 0.8 kg of beef, Kirst then woke up with munchies at midnight... good girl! Our Hostel differs from the norm here as well but i,ll put pictures of that up tomorrow.
until the next time.
