"Ceremony was an essential part of traditional Central African life. A person's coming of age required that he undergo the 'cutting ritual' (circumcision), the ceremony of adulthood and so on. Tribes would hold sacrifice ceremonies to their ancestors or deceased leaders. Some tribes would hold cannibalistic banquets to celebrate victory in battle. Tribal leaders all needed to use ceremonial weapons to display their authority."
