This and others like it were used at the funeral of (VERY) rich and important people in ancient China. I believe the theory was that covering or otherwise obstructing all the orifices of the body (yes, all) with jade, which supposedly had mystical powers, would confer some of that magic onto the deceased in the afterlife. The deceased would then, of course, work to help his/her descendants in the present world.
