Zhou Principalities
During the later (or Eastern) Zhou Dynasty, feudal order broke down as blood ties weakened and these minor kingdoms exercised increasing degrees of independence, first de facto (the Spring and Autumn period) and eventually de jure (the Warring States period). The kingdoms were once more united under a single ruler by the state of Qin in 221BC, whose ruler at the time is known as the First Emperor of China.
