We did manage to get a flight at the airport at Medan but it meant stopping at Java first... anyway, 6hours later we arrived at Bali airport! Yipeeee! We actually landed at around 11pm but by the time we had got our bags and got in to Kuta it was well gone midnight and we had yet to find a place to stay. The following 2 hours turned out to be the worst two hours of our accommodation hunting since we had started travelling. Basically, we walked to the main bacpackers area and I jumped on the back of a locals motorbike looking for a cheap room whilst the girls sat with the bags. Eventually after a few hours we found a reasonably priced room (about £8) for the three of us which turned out to be really nice, and after being up constantly travelling for nearly 20hours we finally got some rest! We made it!
The next day we didn't do a great deal other than get our bearings of the area and get some rest on Kuta beach. The main beach in Kuta isn't what I expected from a beach in Bali, I expected clear blue waters and white sand, but it wasn't like that at all... it's a really wide beach with golden sand and the sea is really rough with huge waves, I supose thats why everyone comes here to surf. On the beach that day we met a couple of really nice guys from England called Dave and Jay who we arranged to meet that night for dinner at a local place around the corner from us which serves gorgeous cheap food, followed by a few drinks of course! Kuta at night comes alive, its a massive tourist destination for a lot of Ozzy's, its a bit like Ibiza for Europeans... so at night it's so busy. After dinner the five of us spent the rest of the night in a cool little bar callled Greenbox, and it is just that really, a small open faced box of a bar painted bright green and selling really cheap drinks! So we all got drunk!
The following day after a small lay-in, the three of us decided to embark on a little adventure of the island, so we hired a jeep for 2 days and headed off around the island. After around 4 hours and a few stops along the way, one for a KFC and the other for a play on a black sand beach, we settled for the night in a small little beach side village called Padang Bai. Padang Bai is a really nice little town with only a handfull of shops, bars and small guest houses along the sea front, and it's where the ferries leave to Lombok. After asking around we managed to find a room in a place called Marco's which had only just been taken over by a young English couple, Carolina and Sean - the place was really clean and the couple who ran it were lovely so we stayed up drinking Bali Hai (local beer!) with them for a few hours before heading a few doors down to a little restaurant they recomended as serving the best Mahi Mahi (expensive game fish) they had ever had. Of course the three of us had the fish and they were right, it was amazing... and was only £2 each!!
The next morning after pancakes for brekky we went to a beach around the next bay called White sand beach, and it was just that... this was more like the Bali beaches I'd expected! We lazed on the beach and played in the HUGE blue waves for a few hours before heading off further up the coast. The drive was pretty spectacular, for around 3 hours we were constantly driving up and down these windey roads along the moutains that ran next to the ocean, we did stop for a late lunch along the way though in the middle of nowhere before heading off again for a further 3 hours along the north coast of the island to a place called Levina Beach. The reason we came to spend the night here is because from here, if you catch a small longtail boat out into the ocean first thing in the morning, you can usually see loads of wild dolphins, and because your only in a small boat they come really close! As we had an early start the next morning, that night we found a nice little italian to have dinner and then got an early night as we had to be up and out before sunrise in the morning for the best chance of seeing the dolphins. And true to form, about 2km out at sea as the sun was just rising, the dolphins showed up... and there were loads!! And not only dolphins but Whales too!!! It was amazing to see so many, and they were so close! Apparantly we were lucky to see the Whales too as they dont often show up, so it was well worth the early start and the £4 the 2 hour trip cost!! After arriving back on land and having breakfast it was time to head all the way back to the south of Bali, this time cutting through the centre as the Jeep had to be back for 1pm!
The afternoon we got back it was straight to the beach to try our hand at surfing! As it's such a popular place to surf, all along the beach there are boards to rent or hourly lessons, so I watched Dave and Jay have a lesson and thought "I can do that... I dont need a lesson", so Lau and I just rented a board for an hour and had a go! All I can say is it's harder than it looks! We spent a good two hours getting absolutely smashed to bits in the waves just trying to stand on the damn thing! The waves were so strong it was difficult to even get the board out there... at one point a huge wave came crashing down on Lau and the board smacked her in the nose! She thinks its broken again! By the end we were kinda getting the hang of it a little but it's defo harder than it looks! That night we hit Kuta for a few beers, however I came home early as we were due to catch boat to the Gili Islands in the morning whilst the girls stayed out causing mischief... Laura came home too but Amy decided to stay out, and the following morning when it was time to leave, Amy still wasn't home! Typical Aim! We weren't too worried as it's not out of character for Aim to hit the clubbing scene and party for a few days, so after trying to call her and waiting for as long as we could, we had to leave, so we left her a note and some money and told her where to meet us! So for us it was off to the Gili islands for a few days! TBC x
