OK I did it before, I'll do it again. The greatest hits of Laos. Best meal: Buffalo Laap by the Mekong River in Luang Prabang as the sun set - so romantic! Best beer: Beer Lao. No contest, literally - it was all I drank! Biggest annoyance: Buses leaving before 6AM, but no eateries open before 7AM. Runner Up: Guesthouses continually trying to up the room rate when you check out. Weirdest: Getting off the overnight bus in Vientiane at 6AM and watching people doing aerobics in the local park. Biggest westerner ripoff: Paying 10x the price of fuel in Vang Vieng Biggest other traveller frustration: No tourists patronising the authentic & cheap Lao riverside eateries instead opting for the mediocre bakery cafes that line the main drag in Luang Prabang. Traffic horns heard: About 1/day on average. Bliss. Best bus trip: Vientiane to Luang Prabang. Winding your way through stunning limestone peak - so cool. Best bus DVD: Same trip. A Thai ripoff of Charlies Angels. Complete with a car chase involving tuk tusk and rocket launchers, a blatantly titillating flight in a sauna (lots of high kicks, everyone just wearing towels) and a blond, tanned Thai Charlie in a pink cardigan. Best celebrity moment: Being recognized on the streets of Vientiane as 'the crazy flip guy' from tubing. So my time in South East Asia is almost over. I've got a couple more blogs planned, more 'general travel', less 'here's a funny story what happened to me today'. We'll see how they go.
