NICARAGUA 31/03/2008 UNTIL 13/04/2008.
It is a river that make the border between Honduras and Nicaragua.
So, we arrived by boat and got us registered in a Military check point. Then, a minibus took us on a dirt road, to Waspan, our first stop in Nicaragua. Immediatly, people looked more friendly.
The next morning, we had wanted to travel to Puerto Cabezas, on the Caribean coast. But because of the coming elections, some people were blocking roads and buses. We had to walk outside the city and were lucky to catch a bus.
In Puerto Cabezas, the bus couldn't get into the city itself and we had to walk again and take a taxi to the center. It was very hot humid and difficult to find a decent acomodation.
We couldn't get out of Puerto Cabezas because of the elections and people on strikes still blocking the roads and event the airport.
Two days later, we went to the bus station and, with other passengers, waited for an improbable bus departure. After a few hours, a bus came and drove us outside the city. We walked to another bus. During several hours, we traveled on a dirt road, through villages... It was dark when we arrived near a small town. A bus came toward us, we jumped in, and started our journey to Managua. We traveled all night, reached Managua early morning, took a taxi to another terminal and took a bus...
24 hours after we left Puerto Cabezas, we found a nice place to stay in the colonial city of Granada. Not far away, we enjoyed the quiet and relaxing Ometepe Island, formed by two volcanoes (one still active). We hesitated a lot about our next destination. Every minutes, our mind was changing !
Finaly, after a few days relaxing and hiking near the volcanoes, we returned to Granada and took a bus to the border...
