Hi everyone, hope you are all well back home. We've been together in Cape Town for 10 days now and are flying to Durban tomorrow so we thought we'd update you on what we've been up to so far. Sorry it's taken us so long to get in touch but we've been having too much fun!
Harri arrived on Monday the 8th December which was the same day that Britt's family were heading back to England so it was a pretty hectic day. First we went to our apartment in Sea Point, Cape Town where we stayed for 4 days with Mark, Louise, Brett and Ross (Britt's Aunt, Uncle and cousins). They were here on holiday from Durban and were kind enough to let us stay with them in their holiday apartment.
We went to the V&A Waterfront (a large harbour with lots of shops, restaurants and plenty of entertainment) where we had lunch at Spur for Ross' 8th brithday. This is a strong Turnbull tradition however Ross wasn't too keen to stand on the tables for a birthday sing-a-long. After lunch we explored the V&A, browsed the shops and indulged in some drinks along side the harbour as we watched the sunset. Afterwards we headed back to the apartment to say goodbye to Britt's family and crashed because we had an early start the next day.
On Tuesday we set off for Boulder's Beach, a penguins paradise, to get our first taste of the South African sunshine. After a good hour of snap happy Harri and Britt's refusal to climb the boulder's (more like mountains!) with her we settled for sand castle's and gerneral laziness on the beach. We attempted to work on our tans but little did we know the sea was out to get us. After unsuccessful barriers to keep the tide away we met up with Devon and Rainer (Britt's cousin and his friend). We set off for lunch driving through Simon's Town (a small fishing village) and stopped off at Kalk's Bay for some yummy fish & chips. Afterwards we headed to Camps Bay for sundowners (drinks at sunset). Strawberry dacquiris were enjoyed by all whilst we admired the beach and were lucky enough to spot some seals.
It was another early start on Wednesday as we tried to beat the queues up to Table Mountain. After successfully passing as 'children' we hopped into the cable car which took only 3 minutes to reach 1076 metres above sea level! Woah! We were able to walk around the mountain and admired the stunning views of Cape Town. Harri's walking sandals came in handy on the rocky terrain and earned herself the nickname Hiking Harri. (Thanks to Ross & Brett, but not particularly appreciated by Harri!) That evening we went to Primi for dinner in Camps Bay where we had our first celebrity encounter (but not our last). While enjoying the delicious Italian food, Percy Montgomery rocked up next to our table (almost..). For those of you, like Harri, who have no clue who he is he's a famous South African rugby player. The boys both got their caps signed but we played it cool!
The following day we went to Robben Island which, among many things, held political prisoners- such as Nelson Mandela. We were given a tour around by a former inmate and shown Mandela's cell which we found interesting. The ferry journey back felt more like being on Colossus and was the last of the day due to the rocky waves.
The next day we decided to have a practice at hostel life and headed to Long Street, a backpackers paradise. We lugged our life on our backs for what seemed like forever but in reality was probably only 15 minutes. Once there we checked in to our dorm, dumped our stuff on the bunks and headed to the city sightseeing bus (Harri's mum would be proud!) In our touristy spirit we headed to the Jewish Museum (Harri's choice) with enthusiasm which soon defeated us and put us off museums for the rest of the trip! That night we attempted to go out in Long Street as it supposed to be the life & soul of Cape Town's nightlife. Attempted being the key word as we failed miserably and were tucked up in bed by 11!
The next few days have been spent in Milnerton and Noordhoek thanks to the generosity of Mark & Ashleigh and Sharon & Richard who have shown us the more local hotspots of Cape Town. Days at the beach, splashing around in the pool (aka synchronised swimming) and general relaxing was exactly what we wanted!
