After another long drive we arrived at Hervey Bay. We had a little walk on the beach and some dinner before getting an early night as next day we had our Fraser Island day tour.
We boarded the bus a 7.30am to be taken to the ferry terminal where after a fairly short journey we set our feet on the biggest sand island in the world. We got on our big and funny looking 4WD bus - and the 'big shaking' started. We knew that the roads on Fraser Island were unsealed - but neither of us quite realised what a bumpy ride it would be. First stop was at Lake McKenzie - which with its crystal clear water and white sand is one of the most beautiful lakes on the island. We had a nice swim in the lake which was followed by a walk around the rain forest - it was surprising to see so much vegetation on an island of sand. Then we stopped for much some needed lunch before a drive on the beach where we got to see the Maheno - an impressive big rusty ship wreck. But the highlight of our day trip was a flight in a little propeller plane - it was truly magical to see lakes, rainforest, sand blows and the Maheno from the sky.
