A week and a half ago I managed to pull my ass off the beach and head into the mountains to see a little bit of what the Ecuadorian Andes are all about. I headed first to the capital, Quito, to wander the historical centre and more importantly to find material to make my bridesmaid dress!! It is a nice enough city, but it is a big city nonetheless and so I was happy to head to Otavalo, a famous market town set in the mountains where you can easily walk from end to end and out into the mountains. I had almost forgotten how beautiful the andes are, it's been almost 10 years sinces I first saw them. They are green from bottom to top, a patchwork of crops and pastures and forests, really incredible.
Because I loved it so much there, I stayed 5 days and decided to head south for a couple of days before heading back to the beach. And so I am currently in Baños, which sits near the entrance to the upper Amazon basin. Yesterday I spent the day on a mountain bike exploring the Highway of Waterfalls, a highway that descends 61km into the Amazon basin, what they fail to mention is that is also often goes up, so I made it about 40km before I caught a ride back into town. But in my defense, most people stop at km18, at the Pailon del Diablo, the most spectacular waterfall because you can get right alongside and behind if you don’t mind a shower.
And so today I am just taking it easy giving my legs a rest, taking advantage of a fast internet connection before I catch the night bus back to the beach to work on my tan, gotta give Mo some competition!!
I hope all is well with everyone and I will be seeing some of you very soon...Next Stop Mexico!!!
Lots of Love
