Completed the hike to Mt Kilimanjaro which proved to be a challenge on many levels, ie coping with very thin air while walking across dusty, rocky terrain, loss of apetite and then summit day. We woke up at 11pm and starting walking at 20 minutes past middnight. Walked for 8 hours relentlessly uphill, the last 2.50 hours of which was through loose glacial scree. The view at the summit was superb but wow what an effort. The toughest hike of my life. Total walking time for the day was 13 hours followed by 4 hours downhilll the next day on slippery clay through forest terrain. It took a team of 35 guides, porters etc to support our group of 8 hikers. Unfortunately 3 hikers dropped out prior to summit day due to illhealth.
Have now had 3 days of rest in Arusha. Lots of rest, food and laughs. The staff at the lodge have taken a shine to us performing a song and dance at dinner tonight. I will be sorry to move on as no doubt won't ever be back this way.
Off to Lake Manyara tomorrow and on safari.
