Finally updating our blog as we have been taking it easy. Today we travelled around the Providence area and saw some amazing sights. Visited the Rhode Island Country Club, Battleship Cove, a memorial to the US navy, and took in the sights of Newport Rhode Island whaich has to be seen to be believed.
The properties around here are a symbol of the incredibale decadence of the wealthy around the turn of the twentieth xentury. The wealth that was created in the US from the mid 1800's through to World War I was absoljutely obscene.
I don't think wealth of this nature will ever be created again by single individual families. Imagine a Billionaire in 1900 if that was to be converted into equivalent dollar value today.
They build homes of massive size as a testatment to their incredibe wealth. Some of the photos in the Providence album show the summer house, YES, the summer house of the Vanderbilts at Newport Rhode Island.
It was just amazing to see such homes that to them were just their summer vacation homes, incredible.
