My niece (left) makes a protest in Manchester. This is a source of pride, since our family have a history of an independence and non conformist spirit. This isn't just a vague notion either; our ancestors in Colyton Devon are recorded as far back as the 18th century as steadfastly protesting about oppression by religious zealots, who, it seems were intent on telling us how we should live our lives. Ironically, and contrary to popular belief, many of the early settlers to the USA had actually gone there from Devon and other parts because they were fearful of the spread in England of religious tolerance and liberalism - they wanted stricter adherence to the rules expressed in scripture and a more "God fearing" culture. Somehow, many "historians" have interpreted the original settlers are seeking "Freedom" when, in many cases, they were, in reality, after less freedom. I think in many ways, those emigres got their wishes and there's more than a vestige of that ethos in evidence in America to this very day.
