18 June 2014 -Church of San Caralampio
This 12th century church is in the peninsula town of A Toxa, across the bay from the bigger town of O Grove. The sea shells are to do with something religious like ship wrecked sailors being saved by shells lifting them out of the sea in some kind of miracle event, or maybe St James may have spent the night on a bed of shells when he had a vision. Another version of the legend holds that while St. James' remains were being transported to Galicia from Jerusalem, the horse of a knight fell into the water, and emerged covered in the scallops. Finally, its worth noting that the French scallop (as well as a popular preparation of it in cream sauce) is called coquille St. Jacques.
