One of the great things about Spain is the decent measures used when serving shorts. Tonight we had a gin and tonic, which was served in a large cognac glass and, as can be seen, they don't skimp on quantity. As someone who can only claim to speak the most basic of Spanish, I have to pay particular attention when ordering drinks, which, I have to say, is a thing I have done a lot of since I am a heavy social drinker. If you translated Gin & Tonic literally into Spanish, you should theoretically order a "Gin y tonica", noting the use of "y" for "and". In fact, experience has taught me that if you do say "gin y tonica", strangely, you will almost certainly not be understood. In fact, it is essential that you OMIT the "y", and just say "gin tonica" and in doing so you will likely be understood - that seemingly inconsequential adjustment makes all the difference. Similarly, btw, rosé wine is called rosado and occasionally I have accidentally said "rosadA". Again, even though "rosada" is to our ears almost indistinguishable from "rosado", you may as well be asking for a glass of elephant juice. So, simply get it letter perfect and you're in. Weird, innit?
