This green field will soon have an estate on it. I think the path through the middle is remaining. It is an ancient path and one of the things I am fond of in the UK is all those long established paths which are tramped over generation after generation. I even remember being about eight and doing a painting at junior school called "The Long Path" where I portrayed a long and winding path going on and on into the distance, getting narrower and narrower until it disappeared (note there is actually a vanishing point in this picture, although my original one showed a much curlier path). The teacher, Miss Phelps, seemed to like it and she asked what it meant and why I'd done it. I said I didn't know and even now I recall that this mysterious answer irritated her. I admit that I deliberately tried to be enigmatic with Miss Phelps and, in fact, the truth is that I copied the picture and even its title from the cover of a book about Cocoa production, which my mother had brought home from the Cadbury's schools department. It might seem somewhat unworthy, not owning up to this plagiarism at the time but even then I think I knew that there were fascinating ideas that could and should be conveyed and that borrowing from various sources to achieve this was not a bad thing, it didn't diminish the value of still conveying an interesting idea. I accept that not many people will know what I'm talking about here.
