Myanmar is very complicated. As we have travelled through, we have met very friendly locals who give you lifts for free, smiling children and people who just want to have a photo with you. We have never felt more welcomed into a country and we have always felt safe.
We had originally planned to visit Inle Lake, hoping to travel North and visit Mandalay before catching a bus to the Indian border. When we looked online for tickets, we couldn't find any, instead having to go all the way back to Yangon about 20 hours south. This is one way that they keep tourists off dangerous routes, by simply making what sounds logical impossible. As the coach journey there and back was so long and we were already starting to show signs of fatigue after travelling so quickly, we decided to stay in Yangon and prepare for our time volunteering in Nepal.
We went to visit Aung Sun Su Chi's house where she was under house arrest for 15 years. The country is standing firmly by its leader in the current situation. We have seen multiple banners asking others to learn from their leader's example on how to deal with other countries and super powers. On the way there we watched a police band practice whilst their children cuddled at their legs or watched with their mothers, we were greeted with waves and smiles. The music was enticing and they even played Queen. So, it seems you do not have to be monsters to have atrocious deeds happen near to home.
